Summertime Tree Care in Colorado Springs, CO

In the heat of the summer, you’ll want to keep a close eye on your trees and shrubs to make sure they are getting the proper care they require to thrive. For assistance, call the expert team at Tree Artisans today.

Ensuring Trees and Shrubs Have Adequate Water

Your trees and shrubs will require more water during the summer, which is why we recommend investing in an irrigation system. If you already have an irrigation system, we recommend checking it after each cycle to determine if the soil is wet or dry. If it is dry, extend the watering time for that zone.
Mulching also helps conserve soil moisture and irrigation water. If you don’t have an irrigation system, you can apply water through soaker hoses. This water should penetrate the upper 8-10” of soil. For established woody plants, you can water them once a week. For shallow-rooted and newly planted trees, we recommend watering 2-3 times per week (depending on the weather.)
Finally, summertime is prime for vacation. If you’re going on vacation, make a plan for irrigating while you’re away.

Early Fall Color and Premature Leaf Drop

Trees that are under stress during the summer may develop their autumnal coloration or even drop leaves early. Proper soil and root management, such as fertilization, irrigation, and root invigoration, can help push back against these ailments. The premature autumnal colorization, however, can also be caused by vascular diseases or boring insects.
Call our team and we can help you find the root of the issue.

Examining Warning Signs of Tree Stress

As the summer ends, you should look for changes in your tree including:
  • Wilting or unusual loss of leaves/needles
  • Yellowing or browning
  • Premature leaf dropping and color changing
  • Wet, sappy spots on the branches and stems
Sometimes, these can be signs that your tree is being watered too much or too little. However, they can also be symptoms of infestation, disease, and root issues. That’s why we recommend yearly checkups with your local certified arborists.

Storm Season Damage Prevention and Recovery

Summer is storm season, which can cause falling trees, branches, and limbs. High winds and saturated soil can cause root failure and weakened branches in your tree.
When you call Tree Artisans, we can inspect your tree for:
  • Dead, dying, or weak branches
  • Dead trees
  • Decayed or split stems
  • Root disease
  • Dense canopies
  • Poor architecture
  • Species with weak wood
Post-inspection, we can assist in creating a maintenance plan that will ensure your trees survive storm season. We’ll even avoid climbing spikes while servicing your property because they can create additional issues.

Scale Insect Management

Scale insects are commonly found in evergreen and deciduous trees. They attack leaves, twigs, branches, and trunks while they feed on the sap in the plant’s vascular system. They can be controlled with horticultural spray oils, biological control techniques, or installing pest-resistant plants. The best way to avoid scale insects entirely is through preventative maintenance.

Invasive Plant Management

Invasive plant species, like knotweed, honeysuckle, kudzu, and ivy, impact the natural ecosystem on your property. Eventually, they will replace indigenous plants which affect local animal diets. Summertime is the best season to treat and prevent invasive species.
At Tree Artisans, we use a systemic herbicide treatment and apply it to the stems or foliage. The treated brush can even be removed in the winter and replaced with a more desirable spring species.

We had a rather large pine tree come down during the blizzard and left behind a massive, difficult-to-access, root ball. Tree Artisans came out and gave us a fair estimate to grind it. They made quick work of the job and took great care to not damage our lawn or any of the ground surrounding the stump. They cleaned up afterward as well. We are extremely happy with their customer service and would recommend them to anyone needing tree expertise.
